ABB Process Automation has been awarded a contract by Intertrade Hellas S.A. to supply its quality control system (QCS) for both existing and new tissue machines at the company’s Inofyta production facility. The project will deploy ABB’s Network Platform (NP) 1200-based QCS platform, integrating advanced measurement sensors and controls to enhance product consistency, improve process efficiency, and increase data visibility across production lines.

ABB Process Automation NP1200-based quality control system installed in large-scale tissue production facility with integrated sensors, controls, and DCS connectivity appearing on Industrial Automation Monthly.

The ABB Process Automation NP1200-based quality control system will integrate precision sensors, controls, and DCS connectivity for two tissue machines at Intertrade Hellas.

Founded in 1992, Intertrade Hellas is a privately owned tissue manufacturer headquartered near Athens. The company operates four production facilities with 14 lines, producing up to 78,000 tonnes annually. Its product portfolio includes two flagship retail brands alongside private-label offerings for major supermarket chains. Approximately 18 percent of its production is exported to more than 28 countries across Europe and the Middle East, positioning Intertrade Hellas as a key regional supplier in the pulp and paper industry.

The ABB Process Automation NP1200-based QCS will be installed on two tissue machines at Inofyta. The first system, for Tissue Machine 1 (TM1), is scheduled for delivery by the end of October 2025. A second, identical system will follow in 2026 to support the startup of Tissue Machine 2 (TM2). Both systems will feature precision basis weight and moisture sensors, integrated controls, and full connectivity with the mill’s existing distributed control system (DCS). This level of integration is designed to streamline operations, standardize data across production, and provide operators with the tools to reduce variability, react more quickly to process changes, and maintain consistently high product quality.

“Intertrade Hellas is focused on driving efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance across its operations,” said Stefano Cinquina, Global Business Line Manager for Pulp and Paper at ABB’s Process Industries division. “With our Quality Control System, we’re supporting that ambition by helping them run leaner, cleaner, and more consistent operations. This collaboration reflects our commitment to delivering engineered solutions that outperform over time and reinforces our support for the pulp and paper industry in Greece.”

The solution includes ABB Ability™ History, a process information management platform designed for secure, scalable access to time-series data. The platform integrates with dashboards for real-time monitoring, energy and consumables reporting. It uses Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) for connectivity to third-party systems, creating a unified digital ecosystem. By delivering high-quality, consistent data across the mill, Intertrade Hellas will be positioned for deeper operational insights, faster decision-making, and a stronger foundation for future digital transformation.

“This system’s performance in harsh conditions, along with the advanced data tools, gives us confidence in long-term process optimisation and production sustainability,” said Konstantinos Kintis, Technical Coordinator & Production Engineer at Intertrade Hellas. “As a market leader, ABB is the perfect partner to help us embark on the next phase of our digital transformation journey.”

The ABB QCS incorporates high-quality, long-life components designed for demanding industrial environments, minimizing maintenance requirements and replacement cycles. Its advanced basis weight and moisture sensors deliver stable, high-precision measurements to ABB’s multivariable cross-directional control system. This enhanced control capability improves raw material usage. It reduces energy consumption, enabling Intertrade Hellas to achieve greater efficiency throughout production while advancing its sustainability objectives of reduced energy use and a smaller environmental footprint.
