PI Intros Direct-Drive Rotary Stage for High-Precision Automation

Motion Control

PI (Physik Instrumente) has introduced the V-625 direct-drive rotation stage, a U.S.-designed rotary motion system engineered for high-precision positioning and scanning in industrial automation, metrology, and optics alignment. The V-625 stage combines a large 100 mm central aperture with frictionless torque motor technology, enabling smooth, backlash-free rotation with sub-microradian resolution.

The V-625 integrates an absolute-measuring encoder capable of 0.0015 µrad sensor resolution, eliminating the need for referencing at startup and ensuring immediate, high-accuracy position feedback. According to the company, the stage is designed to support vertical loads up to 400 N (88 lbf), with axial and radial runout tolerances that meet requirements for stable, repeatable positioning in demanding environments.

The platform is compatible with PI’s direct-drive linear stages and EtherCAT-based multi-axis motion controllers. These configurations support advanced use cases in beam delivery, semiconductor inspection, cable routing, vertical metrology, and optics testing.

“The V-625 offers the perfect balance of performance, precision, and cost effectiveness,” said Matt Reck, president at PI USA. “With near air bearing precision, it’s optimized for today’s most challenging rotary motion tasks, giving engineers a high-performance rotation stage that integrates easily into complex multi-axis systems.”

Key technical highlights include:

  • 100 mm large central aperture
  • Direct-coupled absolute encoder (0.0015 µrad resolution)
  • 10 µrad calibrated accuracy
  • High load mechanical bearings rated to 400 N vertical
  • Direct-drive, maintenance-free torque motor
  • Compatible with PI’s ACS-based motion controllers

The V-625 is designed and manufactured in the U.S.A. by PI’s own local engineering teams. It supports a broad range of automation, inspection, and research applications in optics, photonics, biotechnology, semiconductor testing, and micro-assembly.
